butterflies at lanoraie bog
well, to own up to our naturey nerdiness … yesterday we zipped out east of montreal to the famous lanoraie bogs to search out butterflies, birds, amphibians and any other sort of naturey goodness.
being a bog, the animal in greatest abundance was the ‘biting fly’ … they circled our heads in droves, trying their hardest to test our love for the outdoors. we persevered, however, and managed to see some really neat critters. there were lots of butts (short for butterflies); for example, there were:
milbert’s tortoiseshells (photo above left), white admirals, baltimore checkerspots, silvery blues (photo above right), monarchs, viceroys (a monarch mimic), some sort of fritillary (probably an aphrodite) that escaped our efforts to identify it, european skippers, some sort of other skipper (maybe a common-branded skipper), swallowtails, ringlets, some painted ladies.
not bad for a spring outing!
we also lucked upon a painted turtle, a whole bunch of green frogs, and bullfrogs, and two southern leopard frogs in amplexus (that’s froggy sex).
lots of birds, too. the day was blazing hot, blue skies, and thick, humid greenery everywhere we looked. … there is nothing more precious for winter-burned canadian souls than ridiculously hot summer days ….
